For those looking to relax or nature lovers, you too will feel right at home at the Northern most part of Texel Island. The North Sea and beaches are right outside your door as are the dunes and the National Park with its hiking & cycling routes.

The beach

Texel has more than 30 kilometers of white sandy beaches along its Northern coast. Each stretch of beach has its own character. The sprawling beach along the lighthouse is particularly suited to the active types, where one can enjoy buggy sailing, kite surfing, surfing and kiting.

At marker 33, there are sea canoes and catamarans for hire. The Wadden coast begins just the other side of the lighthouse. Here you will find various small and quaint beaches.

Eierland Lighthouse

The 150 year old lighthouse is a Texel’s icon and its history has been a turbulent and restless one. Throughout the years Eierland Lighthouse has played an important role in spectacular rescues as well as in tracking down smugglers and scavengers.

The lighthouse now houses a museum. The climb to the top is well worth the effort, because the view is nothing short of magnificent.

National Park

Duinpark De Robbenjager is located in the National Park Dunes of Texel. This unique nature reserve, encompassing the entire Dune and wooded area enjoy protected status.  “The areas “De Slufter”, “de Muy”, “de Horspolder”, and “de Nederlanden”, are areas of particular environmental interest, and are home to hundreds of rare plant and animal species.

The area has an extensive network of trails for hiking, cycling and horse riding. The wooded area has various open fields for play as well as a designated barbecue area.

The villages

Texel numbers seven villages. The youngest village is “De Cocksdorp”, originates from 1835 and grew from the harbour where the “Roggesloot” flows into the “Eierlandsche Gat”, (Eierlands inlet). Its original name was changed only after a few short months from “Nieuwdorp” to “De Cocksdorp”, named after N.J. de Cock, who initiated the land reclamation of Eierland. “De Cocksdorp” has a relaxed holiday atmosphere about it. The village serves as a hub for the larger holiday and camping parks in the area. There are many restaurants and pubs as well as a supermarket. In the summer months on Thursdays, there is the “Durpermarkt”, which local dialect for village market.

Day trip to Vlieland

See what the neighbors are doing? Go spend the day in Vlieland. Take the “Waddenveer” (Wadden ferry), “De Vriendschap” in the summer for a daytrip to the neighboring island. This adventure starts at the ticket booth at the “Volharding”, near maker 33, and takes you over the changing wad to the sandflats of “De Vliehors”, also known as the Sahara of the north.

With the “Vliehors Express you travel over the sand flats back to civilization. Late in afternoon the boot returns to Texel.

Golf Course “De Texelse”

Golf Course “De Texelse” offers a challenge to all golfer regardless of experience. The 18-hole course plays through the dunes with water obstacles and large greens. The course has an unrefined character expected from a course in the dunes, with the wind as an added variable. For those still learning the game there is a 9-hole par 3 course.

The golf course open daily from 8 a.m. until sunset. At the “Hanenhuus” there are eats and drinks. Lessons are available at the golfing school. Green fees are discounted 30% at the reception.
